Alan Turing Building

The Alan Turing Building on the campus of University of Manchester is the new home for Mathematics, Astrophysics, and Photon Science departments.
It was awarded the Northwest Regional Construction Award for Sustainability
The design of the building consists of three staggered ‘extruded rectangles’, all unified by a steel roof canopy from which photovoltaics are suspended, generating both electricity as well as shading for the atrium space.
The Mathematics and Astrophysics Departments, situated in the two southernmost rectangles, contain offices, computer labs, and lecture halls. A four-story atrium connecting the two departments provide public space for the students.
The northernmost rectangle is home to the Photon Science department. Different functional requirements for this department necessitated the use of concrete structure versus a lighter weight steel structure for the previous two departments.  A glazed bridge walkway connects these two buildings.
The building is clad in zinc strip panels and ribbon glazing.  The glazing incorporates top hinged opening windows that allow for natural ventilation.  These are controlled by the occupant and helps with the overall cooling of the spaces during summer months. .
